Will gun laws hurt the mentally ill?
Will gun laws hurt the mentally ill? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21890032
The title is a bit misleading, but the article is about how new alerts NY’s gun law actually contribute to further stigmatization of people who suffer from mental illness.
As someone who has mental illnesses that have affected my job and schooling prospects (my high school’s administration was terrible to me after I got out of the hospital and wouldn’t let me return for months). I feel that laws like this definitely hurt people like me, essentially putting us on a government watch list of people that are “potentially dangerous” and could be used against us in other ways. It is fucking profiling.

Announcing the December Project: Surviving the Holidays with the trans community
I wanted to announce what we’re calling THE DECEMBER PROJECT, a reachout by Dylan Scholinski, Mara Keisling, Jennifer Finney Boylan, and Helen Boyd to raise the spirits of people in the trans community during what can be a difficult time of year.
We are trans activists, homebodies, authors, parents, spouses, artists, and teachers, including a trans man, two trans women, and a loving spouse. Here’s our pledge to you: If you feel low this December, and need someone to talk to, contact us, and we’ll call you on the phone. Period.
I might actually need to take advantage of this at some point.
Really glad this exists.
As much as it is popular for the “queer community” to hate on Lady Gaga
Her charity work is quite admirable. She donated a million dollars to the Red Cross to help with Hurricane Sandy relief.
There’s no doubt that there are some issues about her, but she has also done some good stuff. Being a female pop star to publicly come out as having struggled with an eating disorder is quite amazing…Especially when you consider her fan base amongst gay men. There is an eating disorder and body image problem in the gay male community, but it isn’t really spoken about (as is the case with men with eating disorders in general), so I can see this giving a lot of gay men courage to speak out about their struggles with the issue.
I’m wouldn’t call myself a fan, but I find little reason to hate her as well.
(PS: And for those who are all like “Well, the mainstream gay community has those body image pressures, the queer community doesn’t”. That’s a fucking LIE. Okay, do you know how pressured I feel by the queer community to look a certain way in order to be considered “desirable”? It is fucking awful and why I choose to keep an arm’s length away for my own well-being. Sorry that I’m don’t purposefully “visibly queer”, don’t have the right haircut, am not skinny, androgynous, genderfuck, or “fat and proud”. Sorry I’m not white, sorry I don’t have tattoos, piercings, and I shower every day.)

Inherited Scars // Sage Francis
Is it my place to put a smile on your face?
Could I erase your body language telling you it’s all been said before?
Or change the words you wrote, exchanging your scars for my metaphors?
Warning: this song is about self-injury, but it is fucking BRILLIANT.

The President’s statements on gun control and people with mental illness tonight are very disappointing. Let’s stop perpetuating stereotypes that are incredibly untrue; people with mental illnesses are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.
Yeah! I was cringing every single time he mentioned people with mental illness while he was talking about gun control.
Statements like that are why people like me get removed from schools and have a hard time finding jobs…Because we’re seen as “potential violent timebombs”.
Why is there now a label on my meds that say “Do not drink alcoholic beverages when taking this medication”?
Never said that before on the bottle. It is just a SSRI, not an MAOI…Ergo, not a big deal.
Fuck that noise, going to drink anyway for the VP debate and my 3-day weekend.

I’m pretty sure that I an name about 5 people who want me to put a suicide hotline on speed dial.
What the fuck, Goucher?!
A “Mental Illness Film Festival”? Fuck you.
I especially object to showing As Good As It Gets to “highlight” Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
I don’t want to sit around with a bunch of idiot Goucherites having to explain what living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, and other things are REALLY like.
Popular media portrayals of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are how I got saddled with nicknames like “Howard Hughes” and “Monk” in my teens.
I just want to try to keep my problems as private and hidden as possible at Goucher, not have a spotlight shined on them.
Billy perfectly explains living with mental illness (or any kind of chronic illness).

this person is incredible
I think that everyone needs to see this, because this is really how I view the world…Except I even obsess about what TYPES of germs are in/on stuff and what they could do (especially when it comes to food).

My medication barely works, but I’m too scared and apathetic to try another one (alterations to my medication affect me really badly…You know how psych meds warn that you may become suicidal when starting or stopping the medication? Yeah, that’s me).
